Welcome to How to Study Korean! The purpose of this website is to provide Korean learners with a one-stop resource for learning Korean. We strive to provide the most detailed, accurate and clear explanations at every step of the way – from learning how to read all the way to advanced grammar. Welcome to Unit 1 of HowtoStudyKorean.com. My little sister told me that she taught you how to read Korean! That’s good, because here in Unit 1 you will start learning basic grammar, words and sentence structures. It is very important when you learn a language to build up your vocabulary to be able to speak in every day conversations. But, because your are just starting out, the first few … Hi! Welcome to Unit 0 of HowtoStudyKorean.com. The three lessons in Unit 0 will give you everything you need to be able to read Korean. Having taught all of this to myself, I understand the challenges that an English speaker can have when learning how to read. So, as in every lesson, I will explain everything in a way in which allowed me to understand it when I was teaching it to myself. Study … Unit 1: Lessons 1 – 8 Lesson 1: In this lesson, you will learn the basic structure in Korean sentences and how to create sentences using the word 이다 (to be). Using 이다, you will learn how to create sentences like “that man is a teacher” and “this thing is a pen.” Even to somebody who has been learning Korean for years, it is very difficult to distinguish the differences between: ᄀ, ᄁ and ᄏ; ᄌ, ᄍ and ᄎ; ᄇ, ᄈ and ᄑ; ᄃ, ᄄ and ᄐ; and ᄉ and ᄊ. If you have access to a Korean person, ask them to use those letters in words so you can try to get accustomed to distinguishing them. When learning Korean, you eventually reach a point where the only thing you are learning is other ways to end sentences. There are hundreds upon hundreds of different things that you can add to the end of sentences (to end them or to connect them to other sentences) to give a sentence a different meaning. Lesson 33: In this lesson, you will learn two common ways to use the noun ‘중’ in Korean. You will learn how to place 중 after a verb with ~는 것 to have the meaning of “I am ___ing.” Learning Korean is a multifaceted journey that requires a balanced approach encompassing vocabulary, grammar, speaking practice, consistency, and patience. By incorporating these key principles into your language learning routine, you’ll build a strong foundation and steadily progress toward fluency. Past Tense Before you learn this, you need to know something important. Korean grammar is based on adding things directly to verbs or adjectives to create a specific meaning. For example, earlier in this lesson you saw how ~는다 or ~ㄴ다 can be added to the stem of a verb in order to conjugate that verb to the present tense. The reason this example is unrealistic is because a Korean learner would most likely know the word “서점” before learning the respective Hanja characters for “書” and “店.” Nonetheless, situations similar to this do occur when a learner has a good base in Hanja. Drawing Hanja characters is a challenge at first.
