Importantly, better characterizing cognitive activity in insomnia might help to develop more effective pre-sleep cognitive strategies to facilitate sleep onset. A popular snooze hack involves setting an alarm 90 minutes before you wake up, because that’s how long your sleep cycle is. Keeping a consistent pre-sleep routine trains your brain’s circadian system to anticipate sleep, making it easier to fall asleep and stay asleep. Caffeine consumed even 6 hours before bed measurably reduces sleep quality, far later than most people assume. Setting a bedtime alarm can give you a gentle reminder when it’s time to start your pre-sleep routine. Ideally, you want to be going to bed at the same time each night and have a consistent sleep schedule to keep your circadian rhythm, or body clock, in check. Sleep shifting methods are techniques for intentionally moving your sleep-wake cycle earlier or later, and the science behind them is more precise than most people realize. Get it right and you can beat jet lag before you land, adapt to night shifts without destroying your health, or simply stop losing an hour every Sunday night. Although there is no previous research on the effects of snoozing per se, drawing from the fields of sleep inertia and sleep deprivation, there are several possible consequences to this behaviour. Snoozing may shorten sleep, compared to setting the alarm to a later time and waking up immediately. The findings indicate that while snoozing doesn't significantly impact mood or sleep architecture, it may reduce sleep inertia and slightly enhance cognition upon waking, offering new insights... Ally Hirschlag discovers that waking up naturally can be surprisingly easy, if you take care of other sleep essentials. However, these experiments typically fragment a full night of sleep, and it is unknown whether a brief period of sleep fragmentation prior to awakening has similar negative effects. The results suggest that the length of the environmental intervention may play a role in mitigating feelings of sleep inertia, particularly for groups who might exhibit stronger feelings of sleep inertia, including evening types.
