Film follows the romantic exploits of two depression-era manicurists, one of whom is being woo'd by a true gentleman of means, the other of whom lets herself become a pawn of operators of a call-girl ring.

The story revolves around three women and a transvestite working in a beauty salon, whose interaction with one another engenders facets of personality and suppressed desires in each one hitherto unknown to them.

Why are they here? They are waiting for the doors to open at the Plastic Surgery Unit run by Dr. Ivo Pitanguy, better known as the "Golden Scalpel"… Edna, Jolanda and Teresa, four of would-be clients, tell the story of their four month wait, the appointments and shared dreams. What awaits them at the end of this long journey? Will they find the beauty and happiness they seek?

Short comedy

Niko, a gay man, is forced by rumours about his sexuality to marry the pregnant Lita who was deserted by a mutual friend. The couple's sex life doesn't amount to much and their relationship becomes more and more tensed through the years.

A masher approaches a lady on the street who is elegantly dressed, but when he gets near enough to see her face he changes his mind so suddenly that he is glad to get away. The ugly woman passes on, however, and on reaching the store of a beauty doctor, decides to step in. The M.D. promises her complete satisfaction and gets busy promptly. First he subjects her mud-colored marcelled hair to a treatment, and in a little while she has beautiful raven-black hair. He massages her face and removes all dermatological defects, and finally gets to work on her teeth; in a few more seconds the woman emerges from the place a fine specimen of natural brunette beauty, with teeth like so many pearls. This time when she meets a gentleman on the street he promptly offers his arm.
