The rich man and Lazarus (also called the parable of Dives and Lazarus) [a] is a parable of Jesus from the 16th chapter of the Gospel of Luke. [8] Speaking to his disciples and some Pharisees, Jesus tells of an unnamed rich man and a beggar named Lazarus. When both die, Lazarus finds himself comforted at Abraham’s side, while the rich man suffers torment in Hades. Although introduced as a parable, the text provides specific names and vivid imagery of the afterlife. Upon their deaths, the roles of the two men are dramatically reversed. Lazarus is carried by angels to Abraham's side, a place of comfort and rest, while the rich man finds himself in Hades, tormented and in agony (Luke 16:22-23). When the Rich Man and Lazarus died, they continued to exist in different realms, one in comfort and the other in torment. This reminds us that our souls persist beyond the grave, and the choices we make now will shape our eternal future. An unbridgeable chasm exists between Lazarus at Abraham’s side and the rich man in Hades. Luke, in particular, stresses the way the status of the rich and the poor is reversed in the kingdom of God. In Luke 16:19-31, Jesus taught the account of the rich man and Lazarus, who went to Hades. The rich man went to a place of torment. Lazarus went to a place of comfort, also called Abraham’s bosom (or Abraham’s side in the ESV). We can learn much from these two and what happened with them. In the story, the rich man is in the bad part of Hades, but Abraham is in the good part and so is Lazarus. From this some have concluded that Hades has two compartments, and the good part is called “Abraham’s Bosom.” Even the dogs came and licked his sores. The time came when the beggar died and the angels carried him to Abraham's side. The Rich Man also died and was buried. In Hell, where he was in torment, he looked up and saw Abraham far away, with Lazarus by his side. This lesson discusses the realm of the dead (Hades or Sheol) and the parable of the rich man and Lazarus in Luke 16:19-31. 22 “The time came when the beggar died and the angels carried him to Abraham’s side. The rich man also died and was buried. 23 In Hades, where he was in torment, he looked up and saw Abraham far away, with Lazarus by his side. 24 So he called to him, ‘Father Abraham, have pity on me and send Lazarus to dip the tip of his finger in water ...
