The story of the Northern Ireland Troubles through the unflinching testimony of two men who played key roles on opposite sides of that bloody conflict. Nearly ten years ago the two paramilitary leaders told their stories on condition that they could never be revealed while they were still alive. The stories told by the Irish Republican Army's Brendan Hughes and Ulster Volunteer Force's David Ervine tell us of the motivations of the participants, the planning of campaigns of violence, the misery of a hunger strike, the tracking and killing of informers and the duplicity that ended a conflict that had lasted too long. It is also a narrative of the fate of combatants when their wars are over.

On the 14th of December 2025, ‘Voices from Ukraine’ was hosted with Out of Frame Cork, a film screening and talk event which provides a platform to local, independent and diverse film talent, featuring themed sessions with filmmaker Q & A's. For Out of Frame’s 27th film talk, Shane Kelleher took the opportunity to shine a light on the ongoing war in Ukraine while showcasing the work of four amazing filmmakers and artists from Ukraine, who now make their voices heard in Ireland. With the war entering its fourth year, Film Nerd Productions decided to turn 'Voices of Ukraine' into a feature length documentary. The audio recorded from the Out of Frame session is featured alongside footage from the rally in support of Ukraine that took place in Cork city, on the Eve of the four year anniversary of the Russian full scale invasion, The Greater Chornobyl Cause annual Chornobyl commemorative service held in Bishop Lucey Park and new interviews from local Ukrainian artists / activists.

Yet amidst the hopelessness, Nelson Mandela and his comrades devised strategies and subterfuges with which they transformed life on the island, while the vision of a new South Africa began to take shape.

‘Voices from the Shadows’ shows the brave and sometimes heartrending stories of five ME patients and their carers, along with input from Dr Nigel Speight, Prof Leonard Jason and Prof Malcolm Hooper. These were filmed and edited between 2009 and 2011, by the brother and mother of an ME patient in the UK. It shows the devastating consequences that occur when patients are disbelieved and the illness is misunderstood. Severe and lasting relapse occurs when patients are given inappropriate psychological or behavioural management: management that ignores the severe amplification of symptoms that can be caused by increased physical or mental activity or exposure to stimuli, and by further infections. A belief in behavioural and psychological causes, particularly when ME becomes very severe and chronic, following mismanagement, is still taught to medical students and healthcare professionals in the UK. As a consequence, situations similar to those shown in the film continue to occur.

A companion piece to Voices from the Waves Kesennuma that forms half of the second installment in a documentary trilogy on the Tohoku region, co-directed by Sakai Ko and Hamaguchi Ryusuke. It captures dialogues between closely-linked people in accordance with the directors' objective of passing on experiences of the Great East Japan Earthquake, which is inspired by the folk tale tradition of the Tohoku region.

Voices from Iraq', then, does not explore the murderous nature of the Iraqi regime. Instead it is a record of war and sanctions as viewed from Baghdad. It was a story that was never adequately told in the west and it makes uncomfortable viewing at times. It also represents an archive of a different kind. In February 2003 myself and my colleague Grant Wakefield were approached by NBC and asked if we had any footage of 'ordinary life' in Iraq. They had already been to the archives of the major US broadcasters and to the BBC, ITN etcetera. That they had to track down two obscure UK film makers to find what they needed reveals a telling fact: in the 13 years these organisations had crews permanently stationed in Baghdad, not one of them had ever filmed scenes from 'ordinary life' in a street, a market, a school, a home . . .
